I reviewed the first edition of this publication six years ago and this latest edition is testimony to the phenomenal pace of change in social policy and law in this area culminating in the advent of the Children and Families Act 2014. The ground that social workers now have to cover in children and families law is so vast, it begs the question where should one start? I was pleased that Davis chose to focus on human rights in her opening chapter, which must premise any intervention made by social workers on behalf of local authorities. Disappointingly, The Children Act 1989 Guidance and Regulations Volume 1: Court Orders (which is under revision, taking account of the changes brought about by the Children and Families Act 2014) fails to grasp this point, but let's hope that it will be included in the final version.
