ChildRIGHT Interview: Gemma Lees, team leader of the Child Law Advice Line

2 mins read Legal

The Child Law Advice Line (CLAL) provides free advice and information on law and policy affecting children. Who calls the CLAL?

Last year, we gave advice to more than 9,000 callers. The main groups of callers are parents, advocates and children and young people themselves.

What are the main issues people call CLAL about?

We provide advice on a wide range of legal problems covering child, family and education law. The calls that we receive are very varied, but we most often receive calls regarding contact, parental responsibility and services for children leaving care. People tend to call us about contact over the holidays, for example, during Christmas or Easter. We get a lot of calls about parental responsibility at that time too, as parents want to clarify what the law is and find out how they can get parental responsibility for their child.
