Rashid Bhayat, chief executive, Positive Youth Foundation: How I Got Here

2 mins read Leadership Youth Work
Youth work has been central to my life for 25 years and the foundations of my career in the sector started by volunteering in youth centres.

Remembering local roots

In 1997, I had been excluded from education and found myself doing youth work in my community - at 17, I set up my first voluntary programme in Coventry.

In my current role, I make sure I always remain humble. I remind myself that it wasn't that long ago that I was washing paint pots in schools as a teaching assistant and play leader.

I am blessed and fortunate to be in the role I am. Staying humble helps you to appreciate the true value of the work we do, and acts as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with leadership roles - in particular when we seek social outcomes for our most vulnerable communities.
