
Volunteering a ‘good fit’
I volunteered with young offenders in prisons while at university, where I was studying sociology, and many of my peers were going into social work. I made a decision early on that the volunteering and third sectors were a good fit for me, because it matched my values – I wanted to work with the NHS, social services or the criminal justice system to help people achieve their goals.
In some of my roles I had oversight for volunteer schemes within larger clinical and specialist services and through this I learned about running projects – this put me in a very good position as a paid full-time volunteer manager, as my understanding of volunteers’ perspectives informed my approach.
