The epiphany moment

My first job out of university was on a very well-paid fast-track scheme for a high-profile oil company. On return from an overseas business trip, I wanted to share with my then primary teacher girlfriend (now wife), that I had just received the bonus that would provide the down payment on our first home together. She also had good news – that she had helped to diagnose the dyslexia of one of her students, and that this would now revolutionise his learning and teaching support. It was that exchange which confirmed that I was in the wrong job, that what I really wanted was a sense of pride in making a difference to people’s lives. Within 48 hours, I had resigned and applied for a fundraising role at the NSPCC, just as it was embarking on the most ambitious and innovative appeal of its kind in the UK.
