
As someone about to take on a management role for the first time in my social work career, this was an opportune time to be asked to review this book. I approached the title thinking it might be a tedious read but I am pleased to say I found it very informative and rich in content.
I appreciated author Sharon Lambley setting out the history of social work management, going back to the bad old days of the Poor Laws; it's always good to reflect on how we got here. She also gets to the heart of the tensions brought about by the exigencies of bureaucracy, performance management and restrictive budgets.
