Nikki Smith, Islington Council

Nikki Smith, Employment and training co-ordinator, Islington Council.

I have been working on Career Start for almost three years now. Islington Council devised it for children in care and care leavers to help them get started in the world of work. Parents and extended family will often help young people with work experience and getting part-time jobs. In the case of our cared-for children the council has taken on the role.

Part of my job is to identify jobs and work experience opportunities that are ringfenced for children in care. That doesn't mean they are simply given a job, but it provides access. Young people in care can lack confidence and they have to compete with others who can really sell themselves at an interview. In Career Start they are competing against their peers as the jobs are only advertised to the 400 care leavers in the borough.
