Mr Pugnacious - Barry Sheerman MP, chairman, Children, Schools and Families Select Committee

Barry Sheerman bridles at recent suggestions that the Children, Schools and Families Select Committee carries little influence. "Some irritating journalist said that select committees make no difference but I don't believe it," he says.

He claims the writer in question failed to do their "homework". But one might be forgiven for jumping to the same conclusion in light of recent events.

The appointment of England's new children's commissioner was supposed to be subject to approval by the committee Sheerman chairs. But Children's Secretary Ed Balls ignored its rejection of Maggie Atkinson, his nomination for the post, and appointed her anyway.

"Some people criticised the committee for not confirming her appointment," Sheerman explains. "In terms of her qualifications and her capability, if I had been interviewing her for the post of director of children's services, I would have appointed her in a shot."
