Graham Stuart, the Conservative MP for Beverley and Holderness, has been elected as the chairman of the Children, Schools and Families Select Committee.

Stuart built up three years experience as a member of the same select committee under the last government, when it was chaired by Labour MP Barry Sheerman, who held the post for almost 10 years.

Stuart has a special interest in education and health policy and a history of campaigning to ensure that pupils in his constituency have access to good-quality education.

In a statement on his website, he promises to use his new role on the select committee to fight to get more cash allocated to local school pupils and more money to refurbish or rebuild local schools.
