Robin Walker was elected as chair of the education select committee in November, replacing Robert Halfon who held the position for more than five years.
Walker, Conservative MP for Worcester, was schools minister in the Department for Education between September 2021 and July last year, a role he says will shape his work as leader of the select committee.
Following his election, he told committee members that “nothing can be more important than education, which unlocks opportunity. The work of the education select committee is more relevant and important than ever”.
Since Walker, who has a four-year-old daughter, took up the helm, the committee has launched an inquiry into the cost of childcare and another into persistent absence in schools.
