Maddie Blackburn's job involves raising the profile of palliative care across the country.

- What is your remit?

My job involves raising the profile of palliative care across the country. Children's Hospices UK has had a development team for some years, but since the Department of Health's Better Care, Better Lives report on palliative care for children, the issue has grown in significance. This means huge pressures for hospices, and there was a requirement here for a senior person to take on a strategic role. I examine everything from training and safeguarding children to finance.

- How is it progressing?

I only joined in February and I have set myself the task of visiting the 41 hospices we represent to find out what their issues are. I am meeting staff at all levels to see what they feel are the big concerns. The aim is to produce a strategic plan, which will go to the committee in May.
