Interview: Kit Malthouse, member, London Crime Reduction Board

2 mins read Youth Justice Interview
Since 2008 when 30 young people were killed in knife attacks in London, levels of youth violence have fallen but the issue continues to blight the capital.

Launched last week, the London Crime Reduction Board (LCRB) is a multi-agency attempt to provide leadership across issues including knife crime and gang culture.

Board member Kit Malthouse believes the LCRB could provide a long-term solution to youth violence despite the fact that all the agencies involved are likely to be hit hard by the 20 October spending review.

"We are very pleased with what the Met has achieved [in reducing youth violence], but there is a lot further to go," says Malthouse. "The Met is certainly not the solution to the problem in the long term. All they can do is suppression. The last piece of the jigsaw is to bring all the bodies across London together to have a shared vision of strategic priorities and where funding should strategically be spent. That is where the LCRB comes in."
