London youth violence mostly involves black males

1 min read Youth Justice
Serious youth violence in London predominantly involves young black men as offenders and victims, a new report has claimed.

An analysis by the London Serious Youth Violence Board (LSYVB) found that between 2007 and 2009, 85 per cent of homicide victims aged 10 to 19 were from black and minority ethnic communities.

The report found that incidents of serious youth violence in the capital had fallen since last year, from 30 teenage deaths in 2008 to 14 so far this year.

However, fear of violence is highlighted as a significant issue with one in four saying they are worried about knife crime in London.

The LSYVB was launched last year in response to rising levels of youth violence.

Its first annual London Regional Narrative aims to challenge negative perceptions of young people in London and reveal the positive contribution they make to the city.
