Recent studies have shown there has been a significant rise in the number of children being home-educated, persistently absent from school and excluded for behaviour reasons, and that the rate of this has increased post the pandemic. It is against this backdrop that Graham Chatterley has written Changing Perceptions: Deciphering the Language of Behaviour, a book for teachers and others working in education settings. Chatterley, a qualified teacher and former assistant head at a specialist setting for children with social, emotional and mental health needs, says the concerning data is the result of children not feeling emotionally safe in school.
