How I got here - 'I used to be a taxi driver'

Denham Hughes, senior practitioner, Peterborough Young People's Service.

- Did you go a youth club?

No - I wanted to but my mum said it was too rough!

- So what was your first job?

I joined the police force for a year - I was only 19 and I really didn't like it. After that I drifted for a bit, eventually becoming a sales rep selling jeans to high street stores. Then in 1992 I was made redundant, and the one thing I knew was that I never, ever wanted to be a sales rep again.

- Still no involvement in youth work?

No, but then I sat down and circled jobs in the paper that looked interesting and they were all in the social sector. When I applied, no-one would give me an interview because I had no experience. I decided to go to university and get a social science degree. I was studying full-time and working full-time driving a taxi - it was about doing whatever it took.
