- What does your job entail?
My role came about because of the government's Aiming High strategy to improve services for disabled children. Autism is one of the targeted disabilities in the strategy and I work with local authorities in the West Country to see how they can improve the services they offer to children with autism spectrum disorders. The National Autistic Society agrees with inclusion, but I try to raise the awareness that some children with autism need specific services, such as out-of-school clubs, which I am also responsible for.
- How did you end up in this job?
I've been in this role since March, but I was working for the society before that. I trained as a social worker and worked in the care sector with adults with learning difficulties, and as a transition social worker with 14- to 25-year-olds. During this time, I encountered a lot of people with autism. When this role came up it consolidated what I'd been doing and was an opportunity to do more strategic work.
