The report, based on a survey of 450 parents and conducted by the National Autistic Society as part of its You Need to Know campaign, aims to urge the government to improve child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS).
Author of the report Tom Madders said the NHS currently does not know how to help children with autism, despite more than 70 per cent of autistic children suffering a mental health problem.
"We want all CAMHS professionals to have training in autism and every CAMHS service to have specialist expertise in autism," he said.
More than half of parents surveyed also said they do not think that mental health services know how to communicate with their child.
