Uncovering future Neets in Sandwell

Who are the children that are at highest risk of being classified as not in education, employment or training (Neet) when they are older?

Is it those who are in care, those who have a history of poor attendance and achievement at school or those growing up in a single-parent family?

As I have highlighted in a previous post, some very interesting work has been done by a team at Sandwell Council to identify which factors can increase the likelihood of a child ending up Neet in their area. The initiative has produced some rather unexpected results.

By analysing information on young people who have become Neet in the past, the team has discovered that being in care, having one parent at home and even prior involvement with drugs are not the most significant factors in predicting a child’s future job prospects.
