Number of Neets fall nationally but rises in some regions

Campaigners have welcomed another year on drop in the numbers of young people not in education, employment or training (Neet) but say more needs to be done to address regional differences.

The latest figures from the Department for Education show the proportion of 16 and 17-year-olds in England classified as Neet was 5.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2018, compared with 6 per cent for the same period in 2017.

More than 60,000 young people are Neet - or their activity is not known to their local authority - out of a total of around 1.1m 16 and 17-year-olds.
