
South Tyneside's population has risen slightly over the past year to around 150,000, 33,000 of whom are aged 0 to 19.
The unemployment rate is 8.3 per cent of all economically active adults, above the averages for the North East (6.5 per cent) and the UK (4.6 per cent). In addition, 7.7 per cent of 18- to 21-year-olds claim out of work benefits, more than double the UK rate.
The area offers a good standard of education, with 57 per cent of primary school pupils achieving expected standards; four percentage points higher than the average for UK maintained schools. At secondary level performance is more mixed with just 35 per cent of pupils achieving grade 5 or above in English and maths, well below the 42 per cent England-wide average. In November, Ofsted rated children's services as "good".
