Local Spotlight: Bournemouth Council

South coast town has a stable workforce and falling care numbers as it prepares to merge with neighbouring councils.

In recent years, Bournemouth has been shedding its image as a retirement haven and is now a bustling student town with a growing population. Estimates show 41,600 of the Dorset town's 197,700 population aged under 20.

Bournemouth's employment rate is above average but income levels are below, and the town features in the top third of the most deprived English councils under the Index of Multiple Deprivation.

Children's services was rated "requires improvement" by Ofsted in June 2014, and like many coastal towns, Bournemouth has a visible homelessness problem.

In February, the government approved an application by Bournemouth and Poole councils to merge with Christchurch Borough Council to create a new unitary authority, which if approved by parliament will begin operating in April 2019.
