Good Practice: How an adventure playground became a hub for the local community

1 min read Play
Created in 1974, Goldhill Adventure Playground has grown in popularity to become one of the largest inclusive groups in Leicester.

Project Goldhill Adventure Playground

Funding Includes about £96,000 a year from Leicester City Council, about £30,000 from Leicestershire County Council and grants from other sources including Lloyds TSB and Comic Relief

Purpose To provide free, inclusive, stimulating play opportunities for children and young people

Background Goldhill Adventure Playground in Leicester started life back in 1974 when a group of parents got together to run activities for children to make up for a lack of local facilities. It has evolved into an adventure play site, run by Goldhill Play Association, with more than 2,000 registered users aged five to 19.

Action The playground is the result of a community effort, explains senior play worker Dee Dixon. All the structures - tree houses, bridges, slides and towers - were built by staff and volunteers.
