A “long-awaited revolution in youth justice” is set to open in the form of England's first secure school at the end of this year, four years later than planned.

Steve Chalke, founder of Oasis Charitable Trust, which has been tasked with running the recently named Oasis Restore on the site of the former Medway Secure Training Centre (STC) in Kent, says that the school is “on track” to welcome its first young people over the new year break.

Despite being blighted by delays related to the Covid-19 pandemic and extensive construction work to transform the STC site into a setting “focused on restoration rather than retribution”, Chalke remains optimistic that the opening will not be pushed back further.
