Medway secure school launch in doubt, warn YOT managers

The launch of the UK’s first “secure school” has been thrown into doubt over regulatory and financial problems, according to the Association of Youth Offending Team (YOT) Managers.

Christian youth charity Oasis Charitable Foundation was awarded the multimillion pound contract to open the secure school on the site of the Medway secure training centre in Kent last year.

This was to open by the end of this year but in November last year it emerged that “a number of complex issues” meant its launch was delayed until 2021.

At a meeting of the partnership Standing Committee for Youth Justice, Oasis founder Steve Chalke and the site’s project lead Clare Wilson revealed further complications that put the future of the school’s launch in doubt, said the association.
