“There are no bars on the doors and windows,” points out Steve Chalke, founder of Oasis Charitable Trust, as he guides visitors around the UK’s only secure school which will soon receive its first students.
Following a change in legislation by the government last year, Oasis will run the school which, when full, can accommodate up to 49 young people aged 12 to 19.
Built on the premise of “relentless love”, the state-of-the-art facility has been designed to turn the idea of a youth custody setting on its head, in a shift away from punishment towards rehabilitation and support, Chalke says.
Opening four years later than planned and dual registered as a children’s home and an academy school, Oasis Restore’s vision is to “transform children’s lives through relationships, discovery and community” from “entry to rehabilitation”.
