The release of funding details for the government’s promised National Youth Strategy – the first for more than a decade – have been welcomed by the youth work sector as a clear sign that improving support for young people is near the top of the new Labour administration’s list of policy priorities.

However, the announcement earlier this month by Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has raised concerns by some that the funding is insufficient to address the scale of young people’s needs nor the squeeze on council budgets for youth services and may represent a net loss for the sector once money from closed programmes is factored in.
