Local Government: Watchdog wants young to complain

The Local Government Ombudsmen Service is sending out leaflets to organisations such as Connexions partnerships and youth advocacy services.

The information sets out what local authorities are responsible for and the kinds of issues ombudsmen are able to deal with, as well as guidance on signposting young people to them.

Jackie Kreel, communications project officer at the organisation, said: "Although we get a lot of complaints about education and children's services, we don't get a lot from children and young people themselves." A Mori survey in 2003 found that service awareness among young people was very low.

The service has since introduced investigators trained to work with young people into its regional offices.
