As someone who campaigns for greater young participation in public life because I believe and have seen how it can add value to decisions made about them, I’ve always welcomed any legislation and guidance that says an authority ‘must take steps to ascertain the views of young people’ but saddened when its only ‘should establish and maintain structured arrangements for doing so’.

If there are any positives to be found in the current situation it’s that many of us will never take the work of teachers for granted again. Keeping young and enquiring minds busy while juggling the rest of your day’s work – and remember teachers also have plenty of ‘work’ to do besides running lessons – can be physically and mentally draining.
