The Pavilion Study Centre, Barnet, London.

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

What is it? The Pavilion Study Centre is one of London's top pupil referral units. It has been identified as an example of best practice and is now informing the way other London pupil referral units operate as part of a pilot scheme.

Who is running the scheme? The London Youth Crime Prevention Board and London Councils are running the three-year pupil referral unit project, which is designed to overhaul alternative education across the capital. The Pavilion Study Centre is helping to create new good practice guidelines.

What will the pilot involve? Pupil referral units are being encouraged to offer young people the chance to gain academic and vocational qualifications. Units are also being supported to work more closely with pupils' families, as well as local schools, colleges and the voluntary sector.

What role do the police play? The police are setting up an online support system to allow young people to report crime anonymously. They will also work to build links between young people at pupil referral units and local officers.

Where can I find out more? You can find out more about the London Youth Crime Prevention Board at www.younglondonmatters.org or London Councils at www.londoncouncils.gov.uk.
