Communities and Families Fund

What is it? The Communities and Families Fund is a grant programme funded jointly by the Scottish government and the Big Lottery Fund in Scotland. It supports local projects that help families and communities give children a better start in life.

How much is on offer? Launched in 2011, the £4.5m three-year fund distributes £1.5m a year. Much of the funding goes to schemes that assist local childcare and family support work. Organisations can apply for a grant of between £250 and £10,000 for a 12-month project. Voluntary and community organisations, statutory bodies and community councils can all apply.

What will it fund? Projects must meet at least one of two outcomes. They must improve the quality of life of children through greater access to early learning, play and child and maternal health support, or they can enable communities to shape and deliver support for families. Examples of the types of local projects that the fund will finance include: parenting support and development projects; community play projects; projects that support better nutrition for young children; and community-based family support and childcare projects. The funding can cover up to 100 per cent of project costs including materials, training costs, overheads and staff.
