Nottingham City Council faces a £50m gap in its budget for the next financial year, following an overspend of £23m in 2023/24.

The council’s chief financial officer issued a section 114 report – which limits spending for councils unable to balance their budgets – last month.

A report published ahead of an executive board meeting on 19 December suggests a range of measures to cut costs, including the closure of Colwick Park Adventure Centre as well as the loss of more than 500 jobs.

The proposals will be subject to public consultation, according to the council.

Nottingham City Council leader councillor David Mellen wrote in a blog for the council: “In order to bridge the large budget gap faced, officers have put forward proposals for consideration by councillors which will be subject to public consultation. These are not things we want to do and certainly not things I became a councillor to do but many may be necessary to meet the scale of the financial challenge.
