
Following a visit in February and March this year, HM Inspectorate of Prisons said the London YOI is “recovering from a worrying decline” and benefiting from “strong leadership”.
Chief inspector of prisons Charlie Taylor said while improvements had been noted during visits in 2020 and 2021, “the transformation we found at our most recent inspection was impressive”.
Since 2019’s critical inspection, which resulted in an urgent notification (UN) being put in place, the YOI’s safety record has been regraded from “poor” to “reasonably good”.
This has been achieved despite a fall in the number of children on “kept apart lists”, in place to minimise the risk violence among young inmates.
