Violent incidents increase by 70 per cent at Cookham Wood YOI

Inspectors have raised concerns around the safety of young inmates at Cookham Wood Young Offender Institution (YOI) after recording a dramatic rise in violence over the last two years.

Violence among prisoners at the Kent-based YOI is “a serious concern”, according to HM Inspectorate of Prisons after finding the rate of incidents has increased by nearly 70 per cent since 2019.

A particular concern is attacks and serious assaults by groups of inmates on individuals.

The YOI management’s chief reaction to such incidents is to keep inmates apart and impose restrictions on their day-to-day life, inspectors found.

But chief inspector of prisons Charlie Taylor said that leaders at the YOI need “to find ways to move beyond this reactive and limiting approach”.

He called for “energetic and motivational engagement with children, as well as the clear demarcation and enforcement of standards”.
