Improvements sustained at Feltham YOI, inspectors find

Improvements in the safety, care and education of young offenders at Feltham Young Offender Institution (YOI) have been maintained three years after it was deemed “unsafe”, inspectors have found.

Following an HM Inspectorate of Prisons visit in October, inspectors from HMI Prisons and Ofsted have praised leaders at Feltham for its third positive report since an urgent notification was invoked in 2019, following a “dramatic and precipitous collapse in standards”.

HMI Prisons followed up five of the recommendations made since its last “impressive” inspection  in March 2022 and found that “good progress” had been made with complaint procedures and “reasonable progress” had been made in three areas: the amount of time children spent out of their cell; addressing unequal treatment as a result of diversity or faith, and securing educational placements when transitioning from custody to the community.
