Young people not in education, employment and training (NEET) in Staffordshire have been offered the opportunity to take part in a new programme aimed at launching careers in the uniformed services.

The four-day programme, run by The Training Initiative, aims to give 16- to 24-year-olds a taste of life in the armed forces and other uniformed services, including fire, ambulance and prison services, police forces and the coastguard.

Run by ex-paratrooper Jay Moore, the course offers an introduction to roles available and application processes, team building and communication skills, a fitness test and presentations by guest speakers.

Moore said: “Our fully-funded uniformed taster programme is a fantastic opportunity for people who are looking to understand more about life in the uniformed services.”

The programme is funded by the European Union’s Positive Directions scheme which pays for training for people aged 16 to 65.

The funding means the course is free for 16- to 24-year-olds, living in Staffordshire and classed as NEET.

It will run twice over August between 10 - 13 and 17 - 20 at Tamworth Boxing Club.

The course comes in the weeks after Chancellor Rishi Sunak promised thousands of jobs for young people worst impacted by the Covid-19 crisis.
