Overall, an estimated 797,000 16- to 24-years-olds in the UK were NEET in October to December 2020.

This was up 39,000 on the previous quarter and is the largest quarterly rise since July to September 2011.

Of those who were NEET in the final quarter of 2020, 460,000 were young men and 336,000 were young women, the new report shows.

Of all young people in the UK who were NEET in the three months to December 2020, an estimated 44.3 per cent were looking for, and available for, work and therefore classified as unemployed. The remainder were either not looking for work or not available for work and were classified as economically inactive, the ONS report adds.
