In an open letter to the chair of the review, a group of care leavers says that “care experienced people face unequal life outcomes in almost every single area of wellbeing throughout life, including in their physical and mental health, and experiences of poverty, learning, homelessness and exploitation.

“People from care are 70 per cent more likely to die prematurely than others.”

A protected characteristic offers everybody in the UK protection from discrimination under the Equality Act 2010 based on issues such as age, sex, sexual orientation and disability.

“If care experience was a protected characteristic, government and public bodies would have a strengthened legal duty to uphold the rights of 100,000 care leavers up to the age of 25 in England, and more 80,000 children currently in care,” the #ShowUsYouCareToo campaign says.
