Addaction seeks payment-by-results commissioning

Treatment charity Addaction is seeking to roll out its Breaking the Cycle (BtC) programme across the UK on a payment-by-results basis.
The programme, designed to help families with drug and alcohol problems, allows councils to target families with multiple problems to turn their lives around.

It was developed on the back of strong evidence of "intergenerational transfer" of addiction problems from parents to their children and has been piloted over three local authorities, Tower Hamlets, Derby and Cumbria, supported by the investment from Zurich Community Trust.

"BtC family workers tackle the specific and deep-rooted issues around a parent’s drinking and drug taking, (such as domestic violence, stress and depression), in one-to-one sessions that support recovery," an Addaction spokesperson said.

"They also deal with practical issues such as housing problems and debt management as well as ensuring the child’s regular attendance at school.

"Because of this unique approach, families are much more likely to open up to our workers, and this gives greater transparency to the needs of children."

The cost of delivering the programme runs to £1,700 per family, for an average contact time of seven months. Addaction is offering to deliver it on a payment-by-results basis,

In partnership with LG Improvement and Development, Addaction is organising an informal information session for interested councils to find out more about the programme.

The free information session for leaders, lead portfolio holders, chief executives and heads of service is being held on Thursday 14 April from 11am to 2pm in London. Places can be booked via Gloria Simon at Addaction on 020 7017 2721 or by email at g.simon@addaction.org.uk.
