What's the background here?
Historically, substance misuse services have tended to focus on the treatment of the user. Unless there was a clear child protection issue involved, the user's wider family life often wasn't really considered. That left a lot of children and young people at best suffering neglect or having to take on caring roles, but also at far higher risk of becoming substance abusers themselves.
But that's started to change?
Generally there's a recognition that a more holistic approach, one that involves family members in the treatment, is more likely to produce sustainable change. Addaction received support from Zurich Community Trust to test this further with a project to trial family interventions.
