The Clothworkers’ Foundation is The Clothworkers’ Company’s primary channel for philanthropy, founded in 1977. The company was initially a clothworking business, but now uses its assets to champion charity governance, and support social causes in the UK non-profit sector.

The Clothworkers’ Foundation is provided with more than £3m per year by the company. Since its formation, the foundation has awarded more than £158m in capital grants to support disadvantaged communities, with £7.1m awarded in 2021 alone.

The foundation’s Open Grants programme is open to applications from registered charities and non-profit organisations, and donates funds to support the construction or implementation of capital projects which aid disadvantaged communities, or other relevant social causes.

What projects are covered?

The open grants programme contributes towards the total cost of capital projects for UK registered charities or non-profit organisations. A capital project includes the purchase, construction, renovation, or refurbishment of buildings; the purchase – not leasing – of vehicles such as minibuses, cars, caravans, and people-carriers; and fittings, fixtures and equipment, such as office furniture, gym equipment, and garden equipment. The grant does not cover equipment intended for one-off use, or which will be given to service users for personal use on a permanent basis.
