In 2000, the executors set up the grant-making foundation to disburse the charitable funds in a strategic way. The assets valued at roughly £60m, mainly property holdings, some stock market investments and a holding in her father’s library which was sold.
By the end of 2023, the foundation had awarded nearly £150m in grants and supported more than 6,600 charities and schools across the UK. The foundation recently announced that it plans to stop accepting applications for the main grants programme over the next year and complete its grant-giving programme by 2025.
Who can apply?
The main grants scheme supports UK-based charities which have a core remit of the arts or learning. Organisations with an annual turnover of less than £150,000 are more suited to apply to the small grants scheme. Generally, the applying charity should be requesting funds for themselves rather than fundraising on behalf of another organisation, although projects/initiatives where applicants work in partnership with other similar organisations can be supported. In these cases, a lead charity must be identified and be the applying charity.
