In 2018, it made grants of £40.5m to a range of charitable organisations working in the arts, the environment sector, with children and young people, and for social change that aim to improve the quality of life for people and communities throughout the UK.
The fund was established in 1961 by financier Ian Fairbairn. He wanted the fund to promote a greater understanding of economic and financial issues through education, but also to establish a memorial to his wife, Esmée, who before being killed in an air raid during World War Two, played a prominent role in developing the Citizens Advice Bureau.
