
“Once you label me, you negate me,” Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard was supposed to have said. And I agree. It is one of my favourite quotes. The trouble with job titles is they have a tendency to squeeze people into unhelpful positions. In today’s egalitarian, flatter-structure, multi-tasking, nimble and fluid work environments, who wants – or needs – to be so tightly defined or constricted anymore? Not me. And I don’t want my colleagues or the children, young people and families we work with to be either. Instead, we need to release potential and break through the constraints job titles impose.
