Inspections Clinic: Young inspection volunteers

Regulators can get a better insight into young people's experience of services by involving them in inspections. Jo Stephenson looks at how Scotland's Care Inspectorate is recruiting young inspectors.

Now – more than ever before – regulators of health and care services across the UK are seeking to actively involve children and young people in their work.

This is true of the Care Inspectorate, the national regulator for care services in Scotland, which last month launched a campaign to recruit more young volunteers.

“We really value the lived experience of children and young people,” says chief inspector, children and young people, Helen Happer (pictured).

“They know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of services and decision-making that impacts on their lives. We need to understand how they experience care if we’re going to understand what ‘good’ means.”
