From October 2023, all providers of supported accommodation for children in care and care leavers aged 16 and 17 in England will be required to adhere to mandatory national quality standards.

The move follows a ban on the use of unregulated accommodation for children in care aged under 16 in September 2021 and ongoing concern about the suitability of placements for older looked-after children and care leavers.

Based on a 2022 survey of local authorities, Ofsted estimates there are around 1,100 supported accommodation providers with as many as 7,000 looked-after children and care leavers aged 16 and 17 living in this type of provision.
