Extreme Parenting - Parenting Your Child with a Chronic IllnessSharon Dempsey, foreword by Hilton DavisJessica Kingsley PublishersISBN 978184310619713.99207 pages
Sharon Dempsey uses the term "extreme parenting" to describe the experience of caring for a child with a long-term illness or chronic condition.
She has personal experience of these challenges and throughout the book refers to her own situation with her son Owen, who underwent treatment for a brain tumour and died at the age of six.
This book acknowledges the emotional and physical journey that parents find themselves on following the diagnosis of a chronic condition. It stresses that with the right support, parents can make the best life possible for their children and family despite the overwhelming pressure that they may feel.
From diagnosis through to education, each logical section provides information on what to expect as well as practical advice, supported by the author's own experience and reference to relevant literature and research. Pertinent action points are presented at the end of each chapter acting as a point of reference for parents to return to.
Throughout the book there is a focus on achieving the difficult balance between maintaining a sense of normality and meeting the complex needs and treatment regimes that may be necessary. Dempsey acknowledges the need to involve the whole family in all aspects of this journey and gives particular advice on the reaction of siblings. Extreme Parenting is an accessible book both for parents and health professionals as each section can be read independently.
