Internet Matters investigated parents' views on their children's screen use, how much time children really spent on their devices, how truthful they were with their parents and if they are content with that amount of time or if it is impacting other parts of their children's lives including sleep, eating or family time.
The research considered how families navigate the complexities of using screens as "babysitters" for younger children, while employing tactics to wrestle older children away from devices. The research also considered how children were spending their time online and aimed to identify whether parents recognise benefits of screen time.
Within these nuanced debates, parents are also trying to work out which approach to take to enforce their guidelines - whether to use a rules-based approach and risk becoming an eternal enforcer or whether to take usage on trust.
