
A youth engagement scheme that has been running in eight local authority areas has been praised for increasing young people's self-esteem and providing them with valuable employment-related skills. De Montfort University's evaluation of the two-year Beacon positive youth engagement Peer Support Programme, which worked with hard-to-reach young people, included a survey of more than 100 participants.
It showed that 89 per cent felt they had gained new skills, while 87 per cent felt more confident. The councils participating in the programme - which is funded by Communities and Local Government and the Office of the Third Sector - were Derwentside, Gateshead, Lancashire, Lewisham, Norfolk, Wakefield, West Sussex and Wirral.
