When David Cameron launched the big society concept in July, youth work seemed very much at the forefront of his mind. Describing his vision of a Britain in which volunteers step in to run local services, the Prime Minister used an example of communities coming together to set up a youth club in order to keep local young people off the streets and out of crime.
Opinion is still divided over whether the big society is a genuine attempt to foster greater community spirit or a back-handed ploy to deliver public services on the cheap. But the reality of the situation is that frontline youth services are already facing huge funding cuts, with the prospect of more to follow in the coming months.
