Youth volunteers to focus on sport

Youth Work
A 380,000 pound scheme to tackle social exclusion and get young people interested in sport is under way across England.

National sports charity StreetGames has received funding from The Co-operative Group and the volunteering charity v to recruit young people aged 16 to 25 from the most deprived communities in England as Co-operative StreetGames young volunteers.

The candidates will be trained in a variety of sports and community leadership skills and will then coach other young people. The scheme has been launched in 17 areas, including east Manchester and Redruth, Cornwall.

Mark Lawrie, national development manager at StreetGames, said the project worked specifically with disadvantaged communities, including in New Deal for Communities areas.

"The young volunteers scheme is one really significant way we can help to alleviate multiple deprivation by engaging young people in sport as well as involving them in the decision-making process in their local communities," he said.
